Wat Phra That Doi Wao The temple is the perfect spot for panoramic view; you can see the range of hill from Thailand’s side to Burmese border. These ancient Buddha relics have been well restored. The environment is filled with trees and paved concrete road. This place is one of the ancient Phra Thats in Chiangrai province; the most ancient belongs to Phra That Doi Tung. In the past, the King Wao who ruled Yonok Nakorn built this place in order to store Buddha’s hair in 364 B.E. Wao is a Lanna language which means a scorpion. Phra That has been deteriorated over time, yet it has been repaired many times also. During the major restoration, Buddha relics had been found and put in the pagoda. Also, it had then been placed in the cornerstone covering with the pagoda as can be seen nowadays. Around Phra That area, it is decorated with shady trees and pleasant pathway. Other highlights include the statues of Phra Naresuan Maharat, Ekathotsarot and Phra Suphan Kanlaya facing Myanmar’s border similar to the statue of King Bayinnaung which also turns towards Thailand from Myanmar representing the good relationship between the two countries. Another highlight is Paichayon Castle which has been constructed in Lanna style for the purpose of reminiscing the good and worshipping Indra. The perfect time to visit is the full moon day on 5th month of Thai lunar calendar, north (the 3rd month south which is Magha Puja Day) as there is a ritual to worship Phra That each year. Also, during Songkran Day, local people will sprinkle water onto a Buddha image. Near Phra That, local food and souvenir shop are available such as Mae Salong , fruits in winter season and beautiful handicrafts. To visit, take Mae Sai road. The temple is 100 meters before reaching Mae Sai border. The entrance to the temple is on the left side with stairs leading to Phra That or you can park at the scenic view point.
