Ban Mae Klang Luang Standing amidst hilly rice terraces, Ban Mae Klang Luang is on the 3rd basin level of Doi Inthanon, Ban Luang subdistrict, Chom Thong district, Chiang Mai province. Ban Mae Klang Luang became the settlement region of Pga-gan Yaw, a Karenic tribe from Burma. Communities in Ban Mae Klang Luang can be divided into 4 villages, namely Ban Mae Klang Luang, Ban Pha Hmon, Ban Nong Lom, and Ban Ang Ka Noi. Each village comprises around 60-80 families. One of the distinctive activities to do when visiting here is to appreciate awe-inspiring views of terraced paddy fields. In rainy season, particularly from September to mid October, the whole landscape of Ban Mae Klang Luang is magnificently covered by a thin layer of fog and verdant rice terraces in descending order. The most second beautiful time to visit is between late October and early November when the entire area is brightened by golden ears of rice. There are a number of natural trails, for example Doi Hua Sua route, Huay Nam Khun bird-watching route, and Pha Siew waterfall route. These trekking trails are ideal for naturalists seeking for peaceful moments or getting to know villagers’ way of life. To get there from downtown Chiang Mai, use Highway No. 108 (Chiang Mai-Hod route) which passes the districts of Hand Dong, San Pa Tong, and Chom Thong. After the distance of 50 kilometers, drive along Highway No. 1009 for 26 kilometers to get to Doi Inthanon National Park. Then make a left turn to enter Ban Mae Klang Luang. Alternatively, visitors can go there by bus. There are Chom Thong-Mae Chaem bus services which you can get on at Wat Phrathat Si Chom Thong. The bus goes pass Doi Inthanon National Park and stops at KM 26 (Ban Mae Klang Luang). Then you will need to walk into the village for 500 meters. At Ban Mae Klang Luang, a vast array of accommodation choices is available, including home stay. There are several residence houses with camping spaces as well, such as Mae Klang Luang View, Inthanon, Kiri Maya. You will be charged between 500-1,200 baht for a night at each residence house.
