Pa Kia (Mae Taman)

Pa Kia or Mae TamanPa Kia or Mae Taman (Kia is northern Thai dialect that means ‘pine tree’). It is located in Mae Taman Water Management Unit, Mae Na sub-district, Chiang Dao district and small parts of Kuet Chang sub-district, Mae Taeng district, Chiang Mai Province. The unit is part of the Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University under The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. It is another place that should not be missed when visiting Chiang Dao district.Tourists can walk to see and study flower beds for example: opium flowers, winter flowers such as Chinese bayberry, peach and experimental coffee plots. For those enjoy watching birds, there are also several kinds of birds such as orange-bellied leafbird, silver-eared Mesia, velvet-fronted Nuthatch, parus major, etc. From Doi Mae Taman, tourists can view ideal scenery of Doi Chiang Dao as a background and wild himalayan cherry from December to mid-January. Tourists can see the sunrise and splendid sea of mist in the morning. Then, they can access to the sunset viewing point in the evening before stargazing at night. They can overstay at two lodgings with restrooms and kitchens, including kitchen utensils, but they have to bring their own food and pay a maintenance fee of 50 baht per person per night. Camping area is also available, but they must bring their own tents. To visit or stay here, please contact the Pa Kia Highland Agricultural Research Station, Doi Chiang Dao, Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University at 0 5322 2014 or 0 5394 4052 at least 10 days in advance.If travelling from Chiang Mai, take Highway 107 until reaching Ban Mae Na at about kilometer marker 67. On the left, there will be a sign of “Mae Taman Water Management Unit” for about 21 kilometers. Then, you will pass two small villages and see wild himalayan cherry trees along the road. After that, you will reach Mae Taman Water Management Unit and go straight ahead for about 500 meters until reaching Pa Kia Highland Agricultural Research Station, Doi Chiang Dao. As the road is still a laterite road and has some bumps, pick-ups should be taken or only 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended in the rainy season.
