Mae Tuen Wildlife Sanctuary Covering the area of 733,125 Rai, Mae Tuen Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the areas of Mae Ramat District and Sam Ngao District of Tak Province. Most of the areas are a range of high steep and complex mountains where there are different types of forest; hill evergreen forest, dry evergreen forest, mixed deciduous forest, and deciduous dipterocarp forest. Mae Tuen Wildlife Sanctuary’s office is at the 35th kilometer of Mae Ramat-Ban Tak route. Interesting sight of Mae Tuen Wildlife Sanctuary is Doi Khun Mae Tuen which is located at the back of the Wildlife Sanctuary’s office. It is a wide rocky ground and a small cave with stalagmites and stalactites. It is also the habitats of many wild animals such as barking deer, serows, bats and etc. Tourists can also enjoy rafting on Lam Nam Mae Tuen, a large tributary of the Ping River flows from mountain in Omkoi District of Chiang Mai to merge with the main stream above the Bhumibol Dam. The rafting starts from Mae Tuen Wildlife Sanctuary’s office and passes the forest in wildlife sanctuary. Tourists will see the way of lives of Karens living in deep jungle, the beauty of nature along with a variety of bird species and enjoy the adventures when passing numbers of rapids; Huay Phra Chao, Huay Samae, Huay Nam Whan, Huay Plu and the most challenging 1-kilometer long rapid called Huay Wua. After Huay Wua rapid, there are still many rapids followed. When reaching the area where Lam Nam Mae Tuen and Ping River meets, there will be boats taking the tourists to the fisherman’s village in Ban Hin Lad Na Hai. Tourists can either stay overnight at the village or go back to Bhumibol Dam.Another interesting sight is Doi Soi Malai. Located 1,600 meters above the sea level, Doi Soi Malai is the highest peak in Mae Tuen Wildlife Sanctuary, overlooking Bhumibol Dam. Its main attraction is its salamander, a rare and ancient creature, similar to lizard with pinkish color. Doi Soi Malai is an Alpine forest with a look-out point to appreciate the beautiful morning mist. The best travel season is from November to January.
