Gems and Jewelry Industries Center (GJIC)

The Gems and Jewelry Industries Centeror GJIC is on Phaholyothin Road KM. 723 in Mae Kaasubdistrict and is only 14 kilometers away from downtown. The Department of Industrial Promotion (DIP) launched a campaign to promote rural industrial development, job creation, community economy, and the competitive ability of industrial sector. Taking the workforce in Phayao and nearby provinces in the North into consideration, Northern Young Women Development Foundation (under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess GalyaniVadhana), Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand and Thai Gems and Jewelry Traders Association joined hands to establish the Gems and Jewelry Industries Center (GJIC) on 11 March 2000, at Mae Kaasubdistrict, Mueang district, Phayao. The center spreads over the area of 26 Rai 2 Ngan. The center aims at increasing employment for the young, solving social problems, boosting community economy, serving as a the hub for gems and jewelry industries in Northern Thailand, as well as promoting tourism in Phayao province. The accepted trainees are allowed to work in factories or family business. Therefore, it is considered a cooperation between the Department of Industrial Promotion (DIP), Thai Gems and Jewelry Traders Association, and other companies to support the rural industry development project in the year 2000-2002. Visitors can buy gemstones or jewelry at the center in seasonable price to enhance income of local people through the renowned jewelry industries of Phayao.
