Wat Phrathat Duang Diaw

Wat Phrathat Duang Diaw or known among local residents as, Wing Chedi, resides at Baan Sundoy-wing in the district of Li, Lamphon. According to legend, during 500-700 (Buddhist Era), Phra Nang Chamarhi (Her Royal Highness Chamarhi), from LuangPrabang, led her people who escaped from war to the area where WiangChedi resides nowadays; forming a new city. At her arrival, Phra Nang Chamarhi’s sacred elephant died whilst leaving 5 mysterious traces. Her Royal Highness commanded the elephant to be burnt and her men to build a Chedi covering its ashes. That particular Chedi, is today’s renowned PhratatDuangdiaw.Although Phrathat Duang Diaw is more than 2,000 years old, other blessed items within the temple is rather new; merely 100 years of age. In fact, the original Phrathat Duang Diaw built in Phra Nang Chamarhi’sera is plastered up with a newer duplication. The creation of Phrathat Duang Diaw seen at the temple today is mainly supported by Luang-PuKrubaaChaiya of Wat Phraphuttabat Huaytom. The reproduction is shaped into a squared-pagoda form, having a rather tall and thin shape; 30 meters in height. The Chedi is placed with a circular base. Nearby lies a monument of Phra Nang Chamarhi’s sacred elephant.Directions: From the District of Li, take highway 106 heading towards the District of Turn, Lampang for 1.7 kilometers.
