Chao Mae Toh Mo Shrine Mae Toh Mae Shrine is located at Soi Phutorn, Charoen Khet Road, Su-ngai Kolok District, Narathiwat. Chao Mae Toh Mo had been placed originally placed inside Baan Toh Mo in Sikirin District until villagers moved it to Su-ngai Kolok District. It is widely respected by the people in Su-ngai Klok and nearby provinces including by the Chinese and the Malaysian. The legend of Chao Mae Toh Mo has been told that Chao Mae Toh Mo was of Chinese descent of the Tang dynasty. A Hokkien inspector had 6 children: 1 boy and 5 girls. His only son was in poor health so the inspector asked for one more child who was Chao Mae Toh Mo. When she grew up, a great master appeared and gave a bible to her. She studied it and it changed her life by eliminating obstacles and protecting people. She went to help those who had suffered from water accidents. The local were so grateful for the goodness of Chao Mae Toh Mo that they built a shrine to pay homage to. It is said that Chao Mae Toh Mo Shrine is a centre of both Thai and Chinese people’s spirituality in Narathiwat as well as the nearby provinces and Malaysia. A ceremony has been held annually at the shrine on 23rd of the third month in Chinese calendar (around April) since 1952. It has become a local tradition as well as a tourist attraction in Narathiwat. There are many activities such as parades and fire walking.
