Wat Phu Lon

The Phu Lon Monastery is located in Songyang sub-district, Sri Chiangmai district. It is 20 kilometers away from the district nd 78 kilometers away from the city in the North East direction. The Phu Lon Monastery features a huge lawn where Ajahn Mun Bhuridatta Thera used as a meditation center under the straw shed. It was told that a tiger approached him but could not do him any harm. Today, there are still footprints of the tiger at this place. The Phu Lon Monastery offers a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, a perfect place for meditation. The biography of Ajahn MunAjahn Mun Bhuridatta Thera was a Thai Buddhist monk of Lao descent who is credited, along with his mentor, Phra Ajahn Sao Kantasilo Mahathera, with establishing the Thai Forest Tradition (the Kammatthana tradition) at Phu Lon Mountain in 1897. This area used to be full of wild animals which was why the local people gathered to help build the rock cave to offering Ajahn Mun a place to safely meditate. Luang Pu Mun practiced meditation in solitude for 5 years with little contact with people. After he had successfully taught Dharma to his mother, he left the place in 1906. Phu Lon Monastery was then his first Kammatthana tradition place.
