Phra Phuttha Nirarokhantarai Chaiwat Chaturathit

Phra Phuttha Nirarokhantarai Chaiwat ChaturathitPhra Phuttha Nirarokhantarai Chaiwat Chaturathit is housed in Thai Mandapa (a square hall with a pyramidal roof) with four gable ends in front of Lampang city hall in Mueang District. It is a Buddha image widely respected by people in Lampang Province. The Buddha image is made of alloy and is entirely blackened; therefore, people are accustomed to calling it “Luang Phor Dam.” Phra Phuttha Nirarokhantarai Chaiwat Chaturathit is a Buddha image in the attitude of meditation, sitting cross-legs with one top of another like Sukhothai style. Its face is bright with eyes open. The right hand is on left hand and so as the legs. It is casted in bronze with lap width of 49 inches. It is housed in the brick and mortared Mandapa with four gable ends. The roof is structured with woodwork roofed with tiles in ancient Thai style. The door and window panels are gilt lacquered in four sides.Phra Phuttha Nirarokhantarai Chaiwat Chaturathit was built by the Territorial Defense Department in 1968. There are four of the Buddha images which are housed in four directions of Thailand. According to ancient belief since Ayutthaya period, there had to be sacred items to protect the country in four directions; therefore, the four Buddha images were built and placed at the four corners, which is called the “fortification of Buddha images in four sides.” Built completely, the Buddha images were brought and enshrined in other provinces throughout Thailand, such as Phatthalung Province in the south, Saraburi Province in the east, Ratchaburi Province in the west, and Lampang Province in the north. It can be counted as a national Buddha image and is widely respected by a lot of people. At present, those who go worshipping this Buddha image will be able to see it gilt almost entirely. This is because of the faith of the believers who continuously pay homage to the Buddha image. It might be so nice if those who travel to Lampang Province also come to worship Phra Phuttha Nirarokhantarai Chaiwat Chaturathit, another sacred item in Lampang, for their good fortune. This place is not difficult to find since it is located in the city center at Lampang city hall, which is not far from the city pillar shrine.
