Prasart Ban Panna

Prasart Ban Panna, also known as Kuu Panna, is at Ban Panna, Panna subdistrict, Sawang Daen Din district, Sakon Nakhon province. It is 11 kilometers away from the center of Sawang Daen Din district, or 70 kilometers away from Sakon Nakhon downtown. This archeological site can be reached via Sakon Nakhon-Udon Thani Road. It is estimated that the construction took place during the 18th Buddhist Century in the reign of King Chai Voraman VII of the Khmer Kingdom. Back then Prasart Ban Panna served as a religious place for ‘Arokaya Sala’ or hospital. It covers the total area of 4 Rai 1 Ngan 33 Square Wa. The official status as a national archeological site was certified on 8 March 1935. Prasart Ban Panna consists of “Prasart Prathan” (the main hall), a square shape structure with balconies and one laterite stupa, and “Viharn” (the assembly hall) in the southeast. Prasart Ban Panna complex is surrounded by a laterite wall in which there is an enormous arch in the east. Outside the wall in the southeast sits a small rectangular pond. The pond is lined with layers of laterites and can retain water throughout the year. The excavation in 1999 revealed numerous archeological ruins, namely the head of Phra Watcharadhorn, fragments of Phra Bodhisattva Watchara Pranee on Garuda, Yama on buffalo, and hands of Phra Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. These figures are related to Maha Nikaya Buddhism and Bayon Khmer art. The condition of Prasart Ban Panna can be described as quite complete and suitable to observe Khmer art.
